Description

Crockpot Sloppy Joes are a delightful blend of savory flavors, made with ground beef, ketchup, and spices. This simple recipe is perfect for a quick weeknight dinner or a comforting meal that everyone will love.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1 small onion finely diced
  • 1 green bell pepper finely diced
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 ½ cups ketchup
  • 8 ounce can tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • ¾ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • Burger buns
  • Pickles
  • Shredded cheddar
  • Coleslaw

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium-high heat, breaking it apart with a spoon until fully cooked. Drain excess grease if needed.
  2. Add the finely diced onion and green bell pepper to the skillet, cooking for 3 to 4 minutes until slightly softened. Incorporate minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Transfer the beef and veggie mixture to the slow cooker.
  4. Mix in ketchup, tomato sauce, tomato paste, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, apple cider vinegar, smoked paprika, chili powder, kosher salt, black pepper, and crushed red pepper flakes if using. Stir everything until well combined.
  5. Cover and cook on low for 4 to 5 hours or on high for 2 to 3 hours until the mixture thickens and becomes flavorful.
  6. Taste the mixture and adjust flavors, adding more salt, vinegar, or brown sugar as needed. If too loose, cook uncovered on high for 15 to 20 minutes to thicken it further.
  7. Serve the mixture on toasted buns with your choice of toppings.

Notes

Feel free to mix ground turkey with lean beef for a healthier option.
Add your favorite toppings like pickles or coleslaw for extra crunch.
